UN Confirms Talks Resume May 26

Reunification talks between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu are to resume on May 26, said a UN spokesman.

The announcement comes following consultations between Special Adviser Alexander Downer and the two leaders. The UN and international community expect talks to resume based on 18 months of negotiations between Christofias and former Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on the basis of a single federal state with a single international identity. However, Eroglu has expressed his intention to negotiate on the basis of two separate peoples and two separate states - or a confederation.

Christofias rejects this position.
