No Crime - Teacher Sex Abuse Probe

andreas demetriouThere are no grounds for a criminal investigation or further action against a female Larnaca public school teacher accused of sexually abusing two 17-year-old boys, said Minister of Education Andreas Demetriou.

An investigation into the allegations was handed over to the Attorney General who sent a letter to the Ministry of Education saying that no disciplinary charges would be made against the un-named female teacher, he added.

The minister criticised the media's handling of the case which led to calls for the police to be involved and lambasted the public school system.

"We are the first to recognise that we have problems in the public schools, we do not expect journalists to hide these problems...but we cannot accept being targeted by certain media," he said.

The story that a public school teacher was being investigated by the ministry was broken by Simerini newspaper early last week.
