Former AKEL MP Found Dead - Police

Former AKEL MP and lawyer Yiannakis Agapiou was found dead on the beach near the Limassol Nautical Club, said police.

Two women walking on the beach found Agapiou unconscious in shallow waters and tried to revive him with the help of lifeguards. But their efforts were unsuccessful and the man was taken to Limassol General Hospital where doctors confirmed his death.

It is believed that Agapiou drowned during his daily swim which he was in the habit of taking every morning at 8am. Coroner Eleni Antoniou said that an autopsy will be held tomorrow July 16th to confirm the cause of death.

President Demetris Christofias paid tribute to Agapiou, saying he will never be forgotten. The 78-year-old leaves behind a wife, two children and three grandchildren.
