Papandreou Visit on the Fly

papandreouGreek premier George Papandreou has met briefly with President Demetris Christofias at Larnaca Airport on his way to the Middle East.

The meeting lasted 45 minutes this morning and was followed by a joint statement amid the anniversary marking the 36th year of Turkey's illegal occupation of the island.

"With a spirit of unity I am sure that with all of our efforts, Cyprus will be united in a just and fair solution," said Papandreou.

He also welcomed Christofias' latest proposals to the Turkish-Cypriot negotiating team, which include the return of Famagusta and ideas on the property issue. The latest package of proposals have been dismissed by Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu as repetitions of previous positions.

The meeting comes ahead of a new face-to-face discussion between Christofias and Eroglu tomorrow July 22nd at the United Nations headquarters in Nicosia Airport. The two men are negotiating on the property issue, but have reported little progress over the last three meetings.
