ITUC Protests Turkish-Cypriot Unionist Arrests
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) have issued a joint statement "strongly protesting against the arrest of 24 trade unionists on August 3 in Northern Cyprus while they were demonstrating against the austerity policy and privatisation projects of the local administration."
The international trade unions said they "are calling on the authorities to end the policy of anti-union harassment and to return to negotiations and social dialogue."
Thousands were involved in the August 3rd protests and a number of people were injured during clashes between protesters and police. The protesters blame Turkey for budget cuts by the Turkish-Cypriot administration amid a 50 percent drop in demand for property and the near-bankruptcy of the Turkish-Cypriot airline Cyprus Turkey Airline (CTA). Analysts say that the protests have added more pressure on the minority coalition administration headed by Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.
