Alleged Romanian Rapist Arrested at Airport

romanian rape suspectAn alleged Romanian rapist wanted by the Italian authorities has been arrested at Larnaca Airport, said police.

The man, whose age and name have not been revealed by authorities, was arrested just after midnight as he was leaving the island. There had been an outstanding warrant for him on charges of rape since 2007, said police.

In 2009 the Italian government issued an emergency decree to crack down on illegal immigration and sexual violence, following a number of high-profile rape cases allegedly committed by Romanian immigrants. The cases triggered violent racist incidents against Romanians in Italy.

The emergency decree set a mandatory life sentence for the rape of minors or attacks where the victim is murdered.

Larnaca CID are investigating the case.
