Cyprus Marks 50 Years - Orchestra Performance
To mark the 50-year anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is to perform Beethoven's Egmont Overture at the Rialto Theatre on September 8th; at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre on September 9th; and the Markideon Theatre in Paphos on September 10th.
Conducted by Spiros Pisinos, the concert is part of the KYPRIA International Festival. The overture and incidental music to Goethe's "Egmont" were written by Beethoven in the years 1809-1810 and reflects the dramatic life of the Count Egmont, a Flemish nobleman.
Egmont opposed Spain's rule in the Netherlands after the introduction of the Inquisition, and he joined William of Orange in his struggle to free the country. After being arrested by the Duke of Alva on charges of treason, he was executed on September 9, 1567. His execution sparked a national uprising which led to the Netherland's independence
A version of Egmont is performed below by the Berlin Philarmoniker.
