Eurocypria Strikers Mob Minister

eurocypria strikeHundreds of Eurocypria strikers mobbed Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis yesterday as he entered the House of Parliament.

Chanting angry slogans and calling on the minister to resign, the strikers briefly blocked the entrance to parliament, forcing Stavrakis to try and struggle through them.

They said the government had lied to them about the future of Eurocypria  and as Stavrakis left, they turned their backs on him.

Eurocypria's operations were set to be wound down on November 13th but the airline company effectively stopped operating as of last week when its 320 staff went on strike.

The government is in belated talks to come up with a plan to handle Eurocypria's business wind-down after the European Union rejected a proposal to merge it with Cyprus Airways.
