N. Cyprus Residents Arrested with Guns, Knives

police arrests nicosiaTwo men aged 19 and 24 who reside in Turkish-held north Cyprus have been arrested by police in the government-controlled areas after they were stopped and searched during a traffic check.

Police said they found a number of weapons in their car, including pistols, knives, woolen face masks and gloves. The driver of the car, a 29-year-old man, resides in Nicosia and was also arrested.

Their car was stopped at 6.45pm last night on the Nicosia-Limassol highway near Stavrovouni. Police are not releasing any more information at this time, said a spokeswoman, adding that for the moment they don't have information on a connection between the suspects and any recent bank robberies or other crimes.

Nicosia crime investigators have the case, which according to some local press reports, was an attempted kidnapping targeting a Jordanian man.
