42-year-old Nicosia Man Dies in Road Accident

cyprus road accidentA 42-year-old taxi driver from Nicosia is the latest road fatality after a violent collision between two cars on the Ayia Napa-Rizolias highway, said police.

42-year-old Panikos Violaris was driving his van at 1.45am Sunday morning when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a car being driven by a 25-year-old woman in the parallel lane.

Violaris died in the accident, and his 55-year-old female Nicosia-resident passenger was seriously injured. All three people involved in the accident were trapped in their cars and the fire service was called to free them from the crumpled metal of their cars.

According to investigators, the 25-year-old driver of the other car tested negative for alcohol. An autopsy is being held today (Monday 14th January) and will reveal whether Violaris was driving under the influence of alcohol, said police. Two small bottles of alcohol beverages were found in the car, according to investigators.
