Call for More Recycling, Awareness - Silikiotis

Interior Minister Neoklis Silikiotis has called for citizens to support recycling and be more careful in their refuse habits, he said during the first Green Dot awards in Acropolis Park last night.

"Cyprus has the sad privilege of being the country that produces the most refuse in the EU. New habits such as buying products in bulk or use material bags to carry groceries and using recycled material is now crucial," said Silikiotis.

There are 117 landfills in Cyprus, which are set to be closed and restored, he said. To combat the problem of pollution from landfills, municipal solid waste facilities were built in Larnaca and there are two more units planned for construction in Nicosia and Limassol. The solid waste processing plant in Paphos will be upgraded, said the minister.
