APOEL Beats Zenit in Champions League Game
Nicosia side APOEL beat Russian team Zenit 2-1 in last night's Group G Champions League game at GSP Stadium after Brazilian players Manduca and Ailton came from one goal down to score twice in the second half.
"We are delighted to have beaten such a quality side, a side for which we have a tremendous amount of respect. Obviously a win of this magnitude has brought great joy to my players; with their attitude on the pitch tonight, they deserved this victory," said APOEL coach Ivan Jovanović.
"APOEL were as good as I thought – fast and aggressive, but not unbeatable. We had the upper hand before the break and a number of great chances in the final stages of the game. We will now discuss our mistakes and try to put them right," said Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti.
Before the game, a tribute was paid to APOEL defender Christos Kontis, who retired after suffering a heart attack last month.
After the Group G round September 13th, APOEL has three points, Porto has three points and Shaktar and Zenit have zero points.
