Turkish Seismic Research Ship Piri Reis SOS - Report
Turkish seismic research ship K. Piri Reis has reportedly put out an S.O.S call after engine trouble in Cyprus waters, say Turkish news sources.
Zaman reports that there are concerns that lives are in danger on board the 33-year-old ship because the engine and generator have not been replaced. The vessel's last known position was recorded yesterday just off Akrotiri, according to MarineTraffic.com.
"We need to get back to Ismir...there is obvious threat to human life here," said Huesyin Avni Belli, director of Dokuz Eyluel's Naval Sciences and Technology Institute which owns the ship.
The ship needs to undergo serious maintenance before undergoing any further exploration, he said.
A spokesman for Akrotiri base said that there had been no S.O.S received from the ship.
K. Piri Reis left Turkish-held Famagusta Port yesterday to continue seismic research in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on behalf of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation.
The government has condemned Turkey's attempts to explore for offshore hydrocarbons as illegal and infringing on Cyprus' sovereign rights to its EEZ.
