Smoking Fines Double - Police

The fine for smoking in closed public spaces has increased from 35 euros to 85 euros, said a police spokesman speaking to CyprusNewsReport.com today.

He said that 83 fines have been handed to smoking offences as of January 1st, 49 to smokers and 34 to venue owners. Over 600 checks have been carried out by police so far, and they will continue, according to the spokesman.

The police are enforcing a new law strengthening an existing rule on smoking in public, closed places which came into force on January 1, 2010.
