Light for Unity - President

President Demetris Christofias made a wish for reunion in Cyprus yesterday during a ceremony marking 'ta phota' - the light - a religious holiday celebrating the visit of the magi to Jesus.

"My wish today, the day of Epiphany, is for, finally, this country to be reunited. Nothing more, nothing less. I am working for this, even if there are doubts, and I will continue to work for it," said Christofias.

Reunification talks are set to intensify on the 11th of January, as Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat get ready for a three-day series of meetings to discuss governance, power sharing, economy and EU matters.

Turkish-Cypriot spokesman Hasan Ercakica announced that Talat put forward new ideas on the issue of governance and power sharing during their meeting on January 4th. He said that 'the Greek Cypriot Side will be responding to those ideas in the upcoming meetings.'

UN Special Envoy Alexander Downer met yesterday with Talat, and told reporters after the meeting that 'the intensive talks are an opportunity to push forward talks.'

The talks will be held at UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun's residence.
