60-Year-Old Woman Killed in Head-on Road Accident
A 60-year-old woman from Ayia Marina Xyliatou died in a head-on collision with a four-by-four vehicle on the Nicosia-Palaichori road yesterday afternoon, said police.
Vassiliki Constantinou's saloon car collided with a four-by-four driven by a 70-year-old man who was seriously injured after veering into the oncoming lane, crashing into Constantinou's car.
The damage to Constantinou's car was so extensive that emergency services had to use special equipment to get her out, but despite their best efforts she succumbed to her injuries and was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.
Constantinou is the first road fatality victim of 2012. Cyprus ranks amongst the highest rates of road accident fatalities in the EU proportional to its population. Many accidents are caused by drunk drivers, excess speed, sloppy driving habits, careless and reckless overtaking, and not wearing a seatbelt.
