Strong Earthquake Hits Philippines Negros Island, 13 Dead

earthquake hits philippinesA magnitude 6.9 earthquake has occurred in Negros Island in the Cebu Region in the Philippines with a depth of 40km today February 6th at 03:49:16 (Universal Time) and 11:49 local time, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The latest estimate is that 13 people have died including a child who was killed after being struck by a falling concrete fence . A number of buildings were damaged during the tremors, report newswires DPA and AP. A local tsunami alert was issued by the Philippine earthquake monitoring body PHIVOCS but then cancelled after two hours observation time.

The earthquake was located 41 km southwest of Toledo (population 15,6916, local time 11:49:16.7), 9 km east of Guihulngan (population 22,931, local time 11:49:16.7) and 8 km east of Malusay (population 2,473, local time 11:49:16.7).

The last major earthquake in the Philippines was in Luzon when a 7.8 magnitude tremblor killed 1,621 people.
