Bi-Communal Committee To Save Apostolos Andreas Monastery

apostolos andreas restorationThe bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage has announced that it will undertake the restoration of the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas.

In a meeting on 17 February 2012 the committee agreed to proceed with immediate emergency support as a first stage and subsequently the restoration of the monument according to the study prepared by the University of Patras.

The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, which was established in April 2008, has been given the mandate for the protection of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the island.

The announcement follows an irate ultimatum from Archbishop Chrysostomos II who said that if the Turkish occupying authorities don't give the green light to restore the monastery, he'll pick up a trowel and do it himself. The monastery is on the point of collapsing, according to the latest reports.
