by Natalie Haughton - The biggest global voluntary action to raise awareness for the environment organised by the WWF takes is this Saturday 31st March. In Cyprus the time to switch off your lights is between 8.30-9.30pm. As part of Earth Hour, this Fri and Sat Mar 30th & 31st, Ikea invites people to bring along their conventional light bulbs to the store for recycling.  There will be a 20% discount on energy saving bulbs and there’ll be hot dogs, soft drinks and ice cream for free.

The Hilton Hotel is also participating in Earth Hour and will be turning off all non-essential lighting for 60 minutes and there is also a candlelight dinner in the Fontana restaurant and a bazaar.  For more info call 2237 7777.

On Fri Mar 30th at 8.30pm, the charity ‘Cans for Kids’ host their quiz night at the ESOBGA Clubhouse next to the Junior School.  It costs €5 per person and there’s a maximum of 6 per team.  Food and drink will be available.  Call to reserve a place for your team on 9966 6011.

The Alkionides Charity is organizing a Vintage and Luxury Bazaar on Sat 31st of March at Café Da Capo from 11am until 6pm Entrance is free and all proceeds will go towards the relief of needy children with serious health problems.

The American Academy School in Nicosia is holding their International Day on Saturday 31st March from 4.30-7.30pm. The event is to celebrate the diversity and cultures of both students and families. There will be entertainment at 5.00pm followed by games for the younger children, live music and food from countries around the world.  Entry is free.

This weekend (31st Mar & 1st April) it’s the Mind, Body and Spirit exhibition at the Pantheon Kanika Hotel in Limassol and will cover the environment, holistic remedies, self development and nutrition. The 7th Cyprus Salsa Congress is taking place from March 31st - April 2nd at the Grecian Park hotel in Ayia Napa.  The event brings together dancers and Latin music lovers from more than 15 countries.  There will be 6 different workshops featuring Tango, Salsa LA, Hip Hop and many more, plus live music.   For details of cost and the full programme rundown go to

The Nicosia Cycling club will be riding from Politiko to Fikardou on Sunday April 1st.  The cycle is for MTB only and will be 40% on asphalt road and 60% off-road. The total distance will be 37km and will take approx 4 hours.  Meet at 9:15 at the car park outside Saint Heracledios monastery in Politiko and you need to bring snacks and rain gear.  After the ride there will be lunch at a taverna in Lazania.  Please RSVP by SMS to 99 513050 (Petros) by Friday 30th Mar so a table can be reserved.

Academy award winning actress, Olympia Dukakis will be giving  a reading of Martin Sherman’s one-woman show ‘Rose’ from April 3rd -5th at the Latsia Municipal theatre  at 8.30pm.  ‘Rose’ tells the story of a survivor of the warsaw ghetto during WWII and sees the 20th Century through her eyes. At Tigadoo this Sat 31st March from 11am -1 pm Petros from Green Concept will be giving a Gardening Workshop and he will share his passion by telling the story of plants and flowers.  Each child will have the opportunity to make their first little garden and take it home and if you decorated a pot at the Mosaic Workshop three weeks ago bring it along. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is performing ‘The Story of Babar the Little Elephant’ on Sat March 31st for children aged 3-8 at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre.  There will be 2 performances; 4pm and 5pm.  Entrance is free.

The Little Kickers family day out is on Sun April 1st from 11am in Acropolis park (opp Marks and Spencer on Athalassa Ave). There’ll be lots of things for children to do including an Easter Egg Hunt, face painting, the Easter bunny and arts and crafts.  Proceeds will be going to the Elpida charity for children.

Direct from Russia, the suitcase duet – Kvam will be performing two puppet shows at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol.  The shows are suitable for children aged 6 and over.  The dates are Sat March 31st at 5pm and Sun 1st April at 11am. For tickets go to

The Cyprus Association of Chartered Quantity Surveyors is holding its 2nd annual Charity Treasure Hunt Sunday April 22nd starting at 11am. Last year’s event raised €5,937.80 and this year the theme is the Olympic Games and the proceeds will go to The Cyprus Autistic Association.  Numbers are limited and to take part you have to register before the event which costs €15.  The forms are on the website there’s also a facebook page.

The American Academy in N/sia is holding two open days for Pre- School, Primary and Secondary Schools.  On the 3rd and 4th April the Academy will be open between 8.30am to 1.30pm for parents and visitors to see the school in action.  Everybody is welcome. 

The 3rd Crossroads Youth Theatre Camp takes place from the 13th -22nd at the Kaminaria village Cultural Centre.  The camp is for teenagers from 15 -18 years old, who live in Cyprus.  The aim is to teach drama skills and team building workshops as well as dialogue sessions. The camp workshops will be in English with visits from international artists, trainers and educators plus there will be other activities on offer. British artist Sarah Hoskins will be exhibiting her latest works at the Cornaro Institute in Larnaca (23 Mehemet Ali St) at a show entitled ‘New Foundations’.  It’s open to the public from Monday 2nd-20th April from 9.30m-4pm.  For any further info call 2425 4042.

‘Mixed Messages’ a show is dedicated to women which looks at female inspired artworks from antiquity runs until June 22nd at the Laiki Bank Cultural Centre 29, Arch Makarios III Ave.

The Holy Cross Catholic Church at Pafos Gate (N/sia) has an Easter concert on Sun 1st April at 8pm which features the choir of Evropaikon Odeon Kyprou.  Entry is €5 and the money raised will go to Alzheimer sufferers.  For more details call 9921 5844

The Gatehouse Singers will be performing ‘Pharoh to Freedom’ across the island. This Easter Cantata is being produced in concert Version, oratorio style, with choir and narrator. It is the story of Passover and demonstrates the vital relationship between Jewish Festival and the Christian Celebration of Holy Communion.   The dates are Tues April 3rd at 7.30pm at Atlantica Aeneas Hotel Chapel in Ayia Napa.  On Wed 18th April at 7.30pm at the Larnaca Community Churst and on Sunday 6th May at St Barnabas Church in Limassol. On Sun April 15th in the Village Square, Aphrodite Hills resort are holding their traditional Easter Market  There will be lots of stalls , selling handcrafted goods, traditional Easter food and drink, fun activities for children such as face painting and a bouncy castle, Easter egg hunt, donkey and pony rides, magic show… and even a visit from the Easter Bunny.  It starts at 11am until 4pm.  All welcome.

Opening on the K-Cineplex circuit this Friday is the action adventure movie ‘Wrath of Titans - 3D’.  It stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Rosamund Pike. ‘The French film ‘The Girl from Monaco’ is being screened on Mon April 2nd at 9pm as part of the Francophone Film Festival at the Cine Studio.  The film will have English subtitles. St Paul’s Catherdral in Nicosia have the following Easter Services 2nd/3rd/4th April Holy Week - 7.30pm Stations of the Cross. On Maundy Thursday (5th April) - 7pm there is the Maundy Meal, Foot Washing, Last Supper, stripping of the altar, Vigil before the Blessed Sacrament.  On Good Friday (6th April) at 2pm there is the Liturgy of Good Friday.  On Easter Sunday (8th April) at 9.30am is it the Holy Eucharist.
