by Natalie Haughton - Over the Easter holidays (9th-12th April) the Artos foundation in Nicosia is running a four day workshop for children aged 7-11 called ‘Kids University – Little Jules Verne’. Starting in May at St Paul’s Cathedral in Nicosia is the 'Hands-on' Science Workshops for children aged 9-11 years old (KS2). With the help of an experienced engineer, children can learn basic Design and Technology make models and have fun. The workshops take place every Tues afternoon from 5-6pm and will focus on mechanisms, electricity and structures together with kitchen chemistry. Street Life Festival 2012 will take place Sat April 28th on Saripolou and Athenon Streets in Limassol from 9am-7pm. On Fri 27th April the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra are performing a tribute to Claude Debussy to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. On Sun April 15th in the Village Square, Aphrodite Hills resort are holding their traditional Easter Market. There will be lots of stalls , selling handcrafted goods, traditional Easter food and drink, fun activities for children such as face painting and a bouncy castle, Easter egg hunt, donkey and pony rides, magic show… and even a visit from the Easter Bunny. On Sat April 21st, The Limassol (Coeur de Lion) Lions Club is holding a Charity Ball to celebrate to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Birthday and her Diamond Jubilee. The 1st annual Klirou – Atovrisi 12km mountain running race will take place on Sun 22nd April at 9.30am. The event has been organised by the Dro.Me.A. Racing runners’ club and is open to everybody (over 16). There’s also a 3km race which you can run, walk or cycle (children can take part plus a 400m race for children. The Cyprus Association of Chartered Quantity Surveyors is holding its 2nd annual Charity Treasure Hunt Sunday April 22nd starting at 11am. Last year’s event raised €5,937.80 and this year the theme is the Olympic Games and the proceeds will go to The Cyprus Autistic Association. The Embassy of Hungary has organised a concert by The Glasso aka Bence Varga, percussionist and glass musician. It’s on Wed 25th April at 8pm at the Pallas Theatre. As well as classical works by Mozart, Strauss, Rossini there will also be hits by Eric Clapton, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra. Entry is free.
The Gatehouse Singers will be performing ‘Pharoh to Freedom’ across the island. This Easter Cantata is being produced in concert Version, oratorio style, with choir and narrator. It is the story of Passover and demonstrates the vital relationship between Jewish Festival and the Christian Celebration of Holy Communion. The dates are Wed 18th April at 7.30pm at the Larnaca Community Church and Sunday 6th May at St Barnabas Church in Limassol. Admission is free. For more details call 9985 4282.

The 3rd Crossroads Youth Theatre Camp takes place from the 13th -22nd at the Kaminaria village Cultural Centre. The camp is for teenagers from 15 -18 years old, who live in Cyprus. The aim is to teach drama skills and team building workshops as well as dialogue sessions. The camp workshops will be in English with visits from international artists, trainers and educators plus there will be other activities on offer. The Iranian film ‘A Separation’ (with English subtitles) is being screened at the Shoe Factory (304 Ermou Street) N/sia on Tues April 10th at 8.30pm. ‘A Separation’ is set in contemporary Iran it’s about the dissolution of a marriage. It won an Academy Award for best foreign language film at the Oscars this year. Entrance is free although space is limited plus afterwards there will be a short discussion and commentary by Dr. Farid MirBagheri, professor at the University of Nicosia, and a reception with tasty Iranian delicacies.
