Kurdish Asylum Seekers Set Themselves On Fire

policeTwo Turkish nationals of Kurdish descent tried to set themselves on fire this morning outside the Ministry of Interior, to protest the rejection of their applications for asylum.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Andreas Ashiotis, the two rejected applicants threw their papers in the street and stood in front of the building’s entrance shouting in their language.

When employees of the Ministry tried to talk to them, they refused to answer and at some point they spread gasoline on their clothes and lit it with a lighter.

The fire spread to an adjacent car and the fire brigade had to put it out.

An ambulance also rushed to the scene which carried the two men to the Nicosia General hospital, with burns, but out of danger
