cyprus eventsby Natalie Haughton - For the first time in Cyprus the iconic house music DJ and producer Steve Angello of the Swedish House Mafia will be performing at Makronissos Beach, Ayia Napa on Sat 16th June. Known as the ‘Swedish Don’, Steve Angello also has his own record label and produced the remix of Robyn S hit song Show Me Love in 2007. On the night there’ll be warm-up sets by Jonathan Reyes, Shadow & Delta Blue. To mark the launch of Andreas Papadopolous’ new guide book called ‘The 44 Beaches of the free Famagusta District’ there is an exhibition of the photographs which are featured in the book. The exhibition opens on May 28th Famagusta Gate in Nicosia until June 7th. For opening times call 9935 1508.

www.discoveringcyprus.com Oxygen Gym (7 Skopa Str. N/sia) has a youth fitness programme tailored for children. The programme aims to encourage more physical activity in children. Andreas Prezas, a fitness expert and trainer will give classes 3 times a week (Mon, Wed and Fri) and these have been designed especially to meet the exercise needs and levels of children aged between 6 and 13 years old. The Magic World of Ballet can be seen on Fri June 1st at 9pm at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol. It features excerpts from many different ballets, from classical to modern together with principal dancers from Moscow and St Petersburg. To book call 7000 9803, children go free.

Lemon Park is throwing a massive pool party on Fri June 1st to welcome the start of summer. There is a 3-day cycling weekend organised by Podilates Nicosia for MTB and Road bikes from Sat June 2nd-Mon June 4th. Accomodation will be at the village of Lemythou (in the mountains near Prodromos) at the Camping site. On each day there will be cycling routes of varying difficulty. You will need to bring a packed lunch with the evening meal at a nearby taverna. The winner of last year’s Liszt Ferenc International Piano Competition, Alexander Ullman, will be giving a piano recital at ARTE Music Academy (Leonidou 34-36), Nicosia on May 31st at 8.00pm. Following on from a tour of Europe and the Far East, Alexander will be performing works by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin. Entrance is €10 on the door (free for students of Arte and the Junior and Senior School). Proceeds go to the Sophia Foundation.

The 12th International Pharos Chamber music Festival is on until June 8th. Prize winning Cypriot conductor/composer Notis Georgiou will be performing his ballet ‘The Abduction of Europe’ on Friday June 22nd at the Strovolos Municipal theatre at 8.30pm. Theatro Ena is performing an English production of ‘Iphigenia in Orem’ by critically accaimed playwrite Neil LaBute. Theatro Transcendental will give two performances in English of ‘Here’s what I Know about Humans’ by Lulu the Dog. The dates are June 13th & 17th at the NGO Centre (just off Kennedy Ave) in Nicosia. On June 1st the Western Sovereign Base Area is holding a 'Party in the Park' in Happy Valley, Episkopi to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Featuring one of the UK’s top tribute bands Queen Alive, together with music from the RAF College Band and 2Yorks Drums Platoon. Cinema Italiano 2012 runs until May 31st at the Cine Studio in the University of Nicosia. The Sunday screenings start at 8pm but all other films start at 9pm will be in Italian, with either English or Greek subtitles (check the website www.ofk.org.cy ). The programme includes ‘The Ages of Love’ with Robert De Niro and Monica Bellucci, ‘KRYPTONITE!’ which is set in Naples in 1973 and stars Valeria Golino and ‘Escort in Love’.

The festival of Portuguese films run throughout June and has been organised by the Cultural Workshop of Agios Omologites in Nicosia. The final screening on June 30th will be "Fados" by Carlos Saura followed by a live fado performance by a Cypriot fado singer – Marina Purita and some refreshing Portuguese rosé and green wine.
