22-year-old Dead in Road Accident

22-year-old Angelos Nikolaou from Nicosia has died in a road accident on Griva Digenis Avenue in Engomi, said police.

The accident happened last night at 11.50pm when Nikolaou's car came off the road, hitting a tree so hard that it was cut through the middle. The 22-year-old was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police said they don't yet know what caused the accident and that they are investigating the circumstances of the young man's death. The victim was wearing a seatbelt, said investigators.

Sadly, two other young people lost their lives in road accidents over the weekend when a young woman aged 20 from Latvia died in a motorcycle accident near Ormidhia, and a motorcyclist aged 30 in Limassol was killed when his vehicle collided with a four-by-four truck. The motorcyclist - Linos Charalambous - was not wearing a helmet, said police.
